Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS, are under scrutiny as an emerging liability risk in multiple regions of Europe. PFAS, also described as “forever chemicals,” are a group of synthetic chemicals that have generated significant concerns related to their potential impacts on human health and the environment.

In PFAS in Europe – Assessing and Modelling an Emerging Risk, a joint report from Guy Carpenter and Verisk, a provider of risk modeling solutions, we discuss liability risks regarding PFAS, litigation trends and regulatory activity, as well as modeling approaches.

Verisk Liability Analytics, in partnership with Guy Carpenter, has developed a model for PFAS liability in Germany, France and Belgium to provide the (re)insurance industry with an initial view and quantification of this potential liability exposure.

The development of PFAS scenarios for Europe will help (re)insurance carriers better identify their exposure to this emerging risk. This new model is a critical first step to better understanding the possible impact on earnings and capital and developing proper risk management approaches.
